Wet and Dry Sandpaper for Automotive Paint
Melton Paint stocks wet and dry sandpaper from 3M and Kovax in grits from P400 up to P3000, for flatting primer, preparing for paint and removing defects before polishing.
Which grit do I need?
- P400 to P600: flatting primer and preparing panels for base coat.
- P800 to P1200: preparing for blending and fine scratch removal.
- P1500 to P3000: removing dust nibs, runs and orange peel from clear coat before cutting and polishing. Kovax Tolecut is a favourite for this.
Common questions
Should I sand wet or dry?
Wet sanding with water and a drop of soap keeps the paper from clogging and gives a finer, more even finish on clear coat.
What grit should I use before clear coat?
Base coat is normally applied over primer flatted with P400 to P600, then clear coat goes on over the base without sanding.
What grit removes orange peel?
Start with P1500 or P2000, finish with P3000, then cut and polish with a compound.
